My experience has also shown me that most Americans are not prepared for what can happen in an ICU. My 10 years as an ICU nurse have shown me that futile care occurs everywhere, and that it is confusing and traumatic for family members, demoralizing for doctors and nurses, and dehumanizing for patients. In one study, critical-care specialists at five ICUs reported that 11 percent of patients received futile treatment, and another 8.6 percent received treatment that was probably futile.
